Bill Maher (born William Maher Jr. on January 20, 1956 in New York City, New York) is an American comedian, writer, host and political commentator. Bill was raised in River Vale, New Jersey, and he graduated from Pascack Hills High School in 1974. He graduated from Cornell in 1978 with a double major in English and History. Bill began his career as a stand-up comedian and actor. One of his early gigs was hosting Catch a Rising Star, the NYC comedy club. In the early 1980s, he made appearances on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show and David Letterman. His big break came in 1993 when he was cast to host Politically Incorrect, a political talk show on Comedy Central. Bill followed the show when it moved to ABC in 1997 and stuck with it until its cancellation in 2002. In 2003, Bill became the host and co-producer of Real Time With Bill Maher on HBO. The show has many memorable moments, including airing a clip of then Delaware Republican Senatorial candidate Christine O’Donnell admitting she dabbled in witchcraft. As a staunch critic of religion, Bill teamed up with Larry Charles to make the movie Religulous in 2008. In 2015, Bill got in trouble for defending the arrest of 14-year-old Ahmed Mohammed over his science project, a clock, supposedly looking like a bomb.

In 2003, he dated Playboy Cyber Girl Coco Johnsen, who sued him in 2004 after their marriage ended. She cited “pain and suffering” and stated that he promised to marry her. The case was thrown out. In 2005, Bill began dating author Karrine Steffans. Their relationship ended and from 2009 to 2011, he dated neuroscientist and podcaster, Cara Santa Maria. As of 2014, he was involved with Anjulie Persaud.
